Auto-leveling takes the guesswork out of most first layers — but "auto" still has a manual check worth knowing about.

Auto-leveling compensates for an uneven bed, it doesn't replace a correct Z-offset

The auto-leveling system maps the bed's surface and adjusts the nozzle's path to compensate for high and low spots, but it's still relying on a Z-offset value to know exactly how close the nozzle should get to the bed at its zero point — if that offset is slightly off, every layer of the mesh will be uniformly too high or too low even though the bed itself is being read correctly. A first layer that's consistently too thin or too squished across the whole bed points to Z-offset, not a re-level.

The probe itself is a wear and contamination point

Auto-leveling probes can give inconsistent readings if the probe tip or bed surface has filament residue, oil, or dust on it at the moment of probing — wiping both down before a leveling cycle is a small step that prevents a surprising number of "my auto level is broken" situations that are actually just a dirty sensor or bed.

Belt tension still matters even with automated bed prep

Auto-leveling solves for bed-surface variation, but it does nothing for X/Y motion accuracy — a loose belt on a Kobra shows up exactly the same way it would on any other printer (ringing, layer shifting, poor dimensional accuracy), and it's easy to overlook when the auto-leveling feature is doing a good job of making first layers look consistently fine.
