Creality Ender 3 Maintenance Guide

Still the most common budget FDM printer around — and one that rewards a little regular attention more than most.

Maintenance schedule

TaskInterval
Check and re-tension beltsEvery 1–2 months, or if you see ringing/ghosting
Check eccentric nuts (X/Y gantry wheels)Every couple months, or if the gantry feels loose
Inspect bowden tube for wear/ovaling at the endsEvery few months on stock tubing
Manual bed level checkBefore most prints, unless upgraded with auto-leveling
Clean/replace nozzleEvery 3–6 months, sooner with abrasive filament
Check all frame bolts for loosenessEvery few months, especially on a newly-built unit

Loose belts are the single most common complaint for a reason

Stock belt tensioners on many Ender 3 variants are simple and can loosen with vibration over time — a belt that's too loose shows up as layer shifting, ghosting/ringing on prints, or inconsistent dimensional accuracy. Checking belt tension by feel (a light pluck should give a taut, consistent tone on both X and Y) is one of the highest-value five-minute checks on this printer specifically, more so than on printers with self-tensioning designs.

Eccentric nuts control gantry wheel snugness, and they do loosen

The V-wheels that ride the aluminum extrusion rails are adjusted by eccentric nuts, and if they're too loose the gantry can rock slightly, hurting print quality in a way that looks similar to loose belts but isn't fixed by re-tensioning them — the correct feel is snug enough that the wheel doesn't wobble, but still spins freely by hand without excessive resistance.

Stock bowden tubing quality is a known, widely-discussed weak point

Many Ender 3 variants ship with a bowden PTFE tube that isn't cut perfectly square at the ends or that wears/ovals faster than aftermarket "Capricorn"-style tubing, which can cause inconsistent extrusion that looks like a temperature or retraction problem but is actually the tube itself — this is one of the most commonly recommended early upgrades in the Ender 3 community for exactly this reason.
