Belt Tension Guide

Belts that are too loose or too tight both cause problems — here's how to check and fix tension without a special tool.

The twang test

Pluck the belt like a guitar string, away from any pulleys. A properly tensioned belt gives a short, clear, fairly high-pitched "twang" and springs back flat almost instantly. A loose belt sounds dull and floppy with a low thud; an overtightened belt feels rigid, barely deflects when plucked, and may not produce much sound at all.

Adjusting tension, step by step

Loosen the belt's mounting or tensioner screw just enough that the belt can be repositioned by hand. Pull the belt taut through its tensioning mechanism (idler bracket, tensioning screw, or by hand on a manual clip system) until it feels firm but not rigid, then retighten the mount while holding that tension. Recheck with the twang test, and repeat if it's still noticeably loose or overly stiff.

Check both belts, and check them the same way

X and Y belts should feel similarly taut to each other — a big mismatch between the two often shows up as different print quality along different axes (fine detail along one direction, ringing along the other). Some printers (CoreXY designs especially) also have two belts working together on each axis that both need matching, even tension to behave predictably.

Re-check after the first few prints on a new or moved printer

New belts stretch slightly during their first real use, and tension can shift after shipping a printer or moving it to a new location — a quick twang check after setup or a move catches this before it shows up as a mystery print quality issue days later.
