Overhang & Support Angle Guide
Angle is measured from vertical: a straight-up wall is 0°, a flat horizontal bridge is 90°.

Why 45° became the "rule"
Most slicers default their automatic support-generation threshold somewhere around 45–55° from vertical, which is where it became a commonly repeated rule of thumb — but it's a slicer default, not a hard physical limit. Print cooling, layer height, and material all shift the real breaking point: a well-cooled PLA part can often get away with steeper overhangs than that default assumes, while ABS (which needs less aggressive cooling to avoid warping) tends to sag sooner than the same angle in PLA.
Designing around supports instead of just adding them
Chamfering a steep overhang into a 45° or shallower transition, splitting a model at the overhang and printing the two halves separately, or reorienting the part on the bed entirely often produces a cleaner result than supports ever will, since supports always leave some surface marking or scarring where they touch the part. Reorienting is usually the first thing worth trying before reaching for support settings.
