Why weight and length aren't a fixed ratio across materials
A meter of PETG weighs more than a meter of PLA at the same diameter, because PETG is denser — the conversion depends on the filament's cross-sectional volume and its material density, not just a generic "grams per meter" number printed on a spool. That's why this tool asks for material and diameter before converting: the same 250g of PLA and 250g of TPU are not the same length, even though they weigh the same.
Where this number actually matters
Slicers report both the weight and length a model will use, but spool labels and marketplace listings aren't always consistent about which one they're advertising. This is also the same math behind the Spool Remaining Estimator, which uses it to turn a scale reading into an actual usable length.
